Windows are one of the most essential home features for fighting off the elements and creating a cosy space.
Therefore, you ought to inspect your windows closely in case they’re a source of draughts and contribute to high heating costs.
Discover what checks you can do to detect if your windows are winter-ready or ripe for replacement, ideas of coverings, and replacement window advice.
Observe if they have gaps
Over time, gaps can steadily form in older, traditional window frames and even the tiniest of them will be a sufficient passage for cold air to travel through.
Run a hand around the edges of your windows to feel for draughts and take a close look at the frames and seals to spot any gaps or cracks. You can also do the candle test to uncover draughts – light a candle, hold it close to the designs, and if the flame noticeably flickers, you’ve pinpointed a draught.
Seal any gaps or cracks with caulking, excluders etc. if you wish to keep your current windows and want to stop the cold from pervading the house.
Install window coverings
Alongside the benefits of elevating window aesthetics and light and privacy control, insulated window coverings will also reduce heat wastage and curb cold transfer.
Thick thermal curtains are especially good for trapping the heat produced by boiler systems and stopping the spread of draughts. The honeycomb-like construction of cellular shades also makes them effective at tightly trapping in air, or add extra insulation to non-efficient windows with the application of window film.
Upgrade to energy efficient windows
It’s a thankless task sealing your windows or turning to window treatments to fend off the weather if air leaks are intense as there will be little discernible impact. There would be though if you had Joedan’s energy efficient Portofino UPVC or Lusso Aluminium windows fitted.
A window upgrade will command a higher investment than choosing to seal windows or purchasing coverings for them, but the long-term gains will be so much bigger from physical and financial standpoints.
Both window collections from Joedan comfortably eclipse the minimum required energy rating with their insulating frameworks and low-emissivity glazing.
Trickle vents are now a mandatory requirement in replacement windows and their purpose is to let a small volume of ventilation trickle into homes to improve air quality, however, any cooling this causes will be marginal. We’ll elaborate more during the course of a design appointment.
